Q: What is Gifted and/or talented?

Q: Aren't all children gifted?
A: This is certainly a question we hear quite often, and it is an argument that is sometimes used to justify the lack of special programs for gifted and talented students in schools. The term, "gifted" has even become taboo in many educational circles. The HGA agrees that all children have strengths and are unique and special; still, we recognize that some children have potential and abilities which are beyond that of what we typically see, for example the 2-year-old who teachers herself to read, or the 6-year-old who builds working electronic gadgets in his back yard. HGA Board member, Dr. Darlene Martin, circumvents this argument as it pertains to the school environment when she says, "If we believe that gifted learners are so throughout the school day, then we should be meeting their needs for more than just a class period or so...the greater challenge beyond recognizing whether a student is gifted or not is to offer a curriculum that furthers their learning."
Q: How do I know if my child is gifted?
A: Unfortunately there is no easy answer to this question. Use the links on our site to begin. For starters, check out these lists of characteristics: Note the Difference: A bright child vs. a gifted learner; and Characteristics of Giftedness by Dr. Linda Silverman. A: Yes. Check out our Community Resources page for lists of providers in Hawaii. Also, contact the Hawaii Psychological Association at www.Hawaiipsych.org or 808-521-8995 for a referral. The HGA is seeking to create a list of providers who are knowledgeable about the testing needs of gifted and talented learners. Q: Can children with learning disabilities also be gifted?
A: Yes. ( coming soon...)
Q: What is twice exceptional:
A: There are several varieties and combinations of giftedness and exceptionalities but each has to be diagnosised assessed individually.
One needs to understand that gifted children are rarely 100% gifted. Most are not. There are different degrees and ranges of "giftedness".
Many educators are beginning to realize this as more research is being done. Suggested reading: Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnosis of Gifted
Children and Adults; J. Webb.

They offer a range of programs pending on the particular population that they serve. Program content for "gifted learners" challenge a students intellectual and creative boundaries.
